The DOM: A Hierarchy of Nodes

Let me reiterate here that nodes are everything in the DOM. You'll spend most of your coding time building references to individual nodes in order to work with them. This means that you need to understand how nodes are structured in a Web page.

The first thing you need to know is that a document's nodes are hierarchical. The Document object itself is a node, and it's the one that sits at the top of the hierarchy. Now consider the following HTML code:
