An Introduction to the Document Object Model

Except for pseudo-dynamic features such as the Window object's alert(), confirm¸ and prompt() methods, all dynamic Web page programming manipulates some aspect of the Document object, either directly (for example, the Document object's write() method) or indirectly via a Document subobject such as Image (for example, changing the src property during a mouseover).

So getting a handle on dynamic scripting means getting comfortable with the lay of the Document object land. In other words, you need to learn about the Document Object Model. In all, there are three such models that you need to be concerned about
