The Basics of CSS

The W3C defines the Cascading Style Sheet language, or CSS, as the primary language for styling. The concept is simple: each individual style sheet applies on top of whatever styling was there before it. This is called the “cascade.”

Before I get into the formal description, I reiterate a couple of terms from the CSS Level 2 Recommendation: the declaration block and the selector. A declaration block is simply a section of CSS code between and including a set of brackets. For example,
