Chapter 34. DOM-2 Range > What Is A Range?

What Is A Range?

A range is a contiguous selection of content in a structured XML or XHTML document. The start point and the end point of the range are the boundary points of the range.

How can a boundary point unambiguously represent the start or end point of a range? The answer lies in the representation of a document as a tree of nodes. If the document node is the trunk of the tree and each element is a branch, sooner or later you get to the leaves of the tree. These leaves are the text nodes of the document.
