Part II: Programming in JavaScript > Forms, Cookies, Windows, and Layers

Chapter 5. Forms, Cookies, Windows, and Layers

JavaScript is very useful for enhancing a Web site. Today's Web pages have become extremely user-interactive, due partly to the use of Common Gateway Interface (CGI). However, CGI is performed on the server-side. JavaScript can be used to perform similar CGI tasks and perform work on the client-side. This client-side programming allows a developer to perform many tasks the user will be able to see and use without having to send a page to the server again. It is this benefit alone that prompts most of the JavaScript programming on the Web today.

Client-side interaction deals mostly with information that users see and transmit. Forms are very popular and abundant on the Internet today. People use them to do things such as place orders online for material goods and submit information to databases. Forms are probably the most common means of client-side interaction in today's Internet world.
