Part I: Foundation > Basic Programming in Flash

Chapter 4. Basic Programming in Flash

Although you don’t have to know traditional programming concepts to use ActionScript, they will help you greatly in Flash. If you’re experienced in another programming language, this chapter might look familiar to you. Flash’s ActionScript language is based on the same standard used by JavaScript (called ECMA-262; see www.ecma.ch). As such, many aspects are similar or identical. This chapter is a good introduction for both experienced programmers as well as those with basic Flash skills. I’ll explain some general programming concepts, but with specific attention to how they apply to Flash.

In this chapter, you will:

  • Learn basic programming terms.

  • Recognize built-in script elements.

  • Get an overview of traditional concepts such as variables and data types.
