Why Use Components?

The only reason to use components is to make your life easier. If your Flash movie needs some kind of functionality that a component has, then go ahead and use that component. As you can see, Flash comes with components that are mostly form elements, with the exception of the scroll pane, which acts a lot like an <iframe>.[1]

[1] An <iframe> is an HTML tag that works only in Internet Explorer, not Netscape. It allows you to open a little window into another Web page, much like a regular frame, but without having to deal with borders.

Generally, form elements are a pain to create from scratch, so I personally find the existing components really useful. As of this writing, Macromedia has also created other sets of components, which are downloadable from their Web site. These include calendars, draggable panes, progress bars, and several graphs. These are shown in Figure 7-2.
