What Is XML?

XML is structured data. It's a bunch of text that can describe an article, a shopping order, a spaceship, a multidimensional array, or just about anything else. Let's use an article as an example. Say you have an article entitled “Soupy Sales: Godfather of the Sitcom.” You're the author, and your name is Irving Archbite. Let's turn that much into XML. Here's one way to do it:

<xml>
<article type="magazine">
       <headline>Soupy Sales</headline>
       <subhead>Godfather of the Sitcom</subhead>
       <byline>
           <author>
               <firstName>Irving</firstname>
               <lastName>Archbite</lastname>
           </author>
       </byline>
       <body>Blah blah blah</body>
</article>
</xml>
