Chapter 31. Writing Bylined Articles

Writing an article (or having it ghostwritten) and getting it published is a terrific, cost-effective way to position yourself and promote your expertise, services, or products. A 1,000-word bylined article costs nothing to run (unlike advertising), yet has enormous impact on readers.

As part of your networking strategy, pursue byline placements in newspapers, magazines, and newsletters read by your contacts, clients, and networking prospects. Approach the editors of your community’s daily, weekly, and monthly business publications. Contact editors of trade magazines and newsletters that serve your target industries. Introduce yourself and offer to write a bylined article on a subject that would interest the publication’s readers. Bylines are intended to inform and educate, so go heavy on advice, tips, and how-to information.
