You will walk into any networking situation with more professional presence if you develop a conversational game plan beforehand. Be prepared with at least three pieces of small talk—light conversation that you can have with anyone you meet. The idea of small talk may make you cringe, but it is absolutely essential to networking. It is a way of learning about other people and finding mutual areas of interest. Applying the following basic rules of effective conversation will help you master the art of small talk.
