Chapter 33. Promoting Yourself Through S... > Start Slowly, Grow Steadily

Start Slowly, Grow Steadily

If your background includes experience teaching or speaking publicly in any way, standing in front of an audience may come naturally to you. If, however, you have no public speaking experience and the thought of standing up and speaking in front of a room full of strangers unsettles you, get some training before embarking on a speaking career.

Plenty of resources are available for novice speakers. Many universities and community colleges offer public speaking courses through their adult education programs. And in most major markets, you are likely to find a local chapter of the National Speakers Association (www.nsaspeaker.org), which offers comprehensive educational resources for speakers. Other good resources for fledgling speakers are Toastmasters International® (www.toastmasters.org) and Dale Carnegie Training® (www.dalecarnegie.com).
