Work the Room

When you are finally face-to-face with your networking target, ask for help clearly and specifically. The more specific your request for help, the more memorable. Rather than saying, “I’m looking for a marketing position,” say “I’m seeking a position with an international marketing firm with a presence in the Far East. I speak Japanese and am willing to relocate abroad.”

Spend no more than 10 minutes with each contact. Ask questions that demonstrate your awareness of the contact’s company and your professional expertise. Then move on; do not get stuck.
