Develop a Target List

Review the group’s membership roster or guest list and identify a handful of people you want to meet or renew acquaintanceship with. Networking success is about quality of contacts, not quantity. Especially if you are shy, setting a goal to talk to specific people will motivate you to break out of your shell and initiate a conversation.

If you have six people on your networking target list, try to learn something about each one before the event. Take a look at the target company’s annual report or other company literature, so you can ask informed questions about the company.
