Many large companies, forced to downsize but eager to maintain contact with former employees, have established company alumni networks online. These networks can be a gold mine for people—currently employed or unemployed— seeking to make valuable contacts and pursue new opportunities. Some companies use their own online networks to rehire experienced and trusted former employees when hiring picks up again.
