Chapter 19. Networking Through Voice Mail > For Incoming Voice Mail

For Incoming Voice Mail

All your networking activity will have been in vain if decision-makers cannot reach you when the time comes. When you are not available to take calls in person and must rely on voice mail, apply these tips:

Leave a clear, concise, professional message. Steer clear of cute, silly, or off-color messages.

If you work from home or are using your house as your networking home base, consider adding a second phone line strictly for networking and business use. If you must share a line with family or roommates, negotiate an arrangement so that between the hours of 9 A.M. and 5 P.M., the message played is your professional voice mail greeting. Be sure you alone answer the phone live during those hours.

Provide the caller with alternative ways to reach you. For example, list your cell phone or mobile phone number, e-mail address, or Web address.

Return all calls promptly and politely. A message may not seem important, but you never know where your next great referral, job, or sale will come from.
