Chapter 21. Formulating an Effective E-M... > Write a Subject Line with Oomph

Write a Subject Line with Oomph

Writers often compose subject lines that are too vague, boring, or cute to be effective. With a little effort, you can learn to write subject lines that make your e-mail messages stand out. Follow these guidelines:

State your message clearly, concisely, and descriptively. For example, a subject line that reads “Executive Position Wanted” does not have the impact of “Corporate Turnaround Expert Available.”

Incorporate contact names. For example, “Matt Kennedy Suggests We Meet.”

Steer clear of spammers’ favorite subject lines. A legitimate e-mail, if accompanied by a subject line commonly used by spammers, is likely to be trashed.
