More often than not, you will be required to reach beyond your existing—and comfortable—contacts to maximize the effectiveness of your network and achieve career success. But the objective of networking is not merely to meet new people and move on. Your goal is to establish and grow long-term relationships based on reciprocity—“I’ll help you today, and someday when I need help, you’ll be there for me.”

Just as you have created a process for cultivating current contacts, so too must you prepare to meet new people. List all the activities, events, locations, and organizations that would put you in direct contact with the “right” people—people who can help make your career goals happen.
