Understanding that networking relationships offer the possibility of growth through six stages of development will help you figure out what behaviors are professional—that is, not too pushy and not too passive.

When you understand these stages, you can assess your current network, determine where you need to put your energies in order to widen and strengthen your network, and take the necessary steps to move your relationships forward. Networks are always becoming. They are never complete or static. They are always dynamic, expanding or contracting to meet the needs of the people involved.
