Chapter 15. Think Big > The Five-Year Test

The Five-Year Test

Does your project point you toward your goal? Will you have the clients? Will headhunters call to see if you would be interested in jobs in London or Paris? Will you make partner? Will your business succeed? Will you be promoted? Does your project set the stage for the phone call you want to receive in three to five years?

Maggie, an author, wants the manager of a beautiful resort or spa to call. She can just hear that person asking her to become the "writer in residence" at the spa for two months during the winter. She wants to give readings from her numerous and delightful books and lead writing workshops for the residents and guests. With this vivid picture in mind, Maggie has no trouble deciding where to market her speaking and writing services now. When associations and other groups invite her to speak, it's easy for her to decide which ones to accept. International Association of Spas and Resorts? Yes! American Association of Automobile Manufacturers? Probably not. She's researching spas. She's writing articles about spas for magazines. She's looking forward to that call.
