Chapter 6. Present Yourself > Exchange Cards Effectively

Exchange Cards Effectively

Handing a business card to someone does not constitute a networking relationship. Strangely enough, the biggest mistake people make with business cards is giving them out too freely, too soon. When you do that, your contact will go back to the office, look at the card, say to himself, "I wonder who this is?" and throw the card in the wastebasket.

Challenge yourself not to give out your card until you've found some connection, some reason for exchanging names and phone numbers. Approach conversations by asking yourself, "I wonder what she needs that I can provide? Let's see if I can figure it out." Or, "I know what I'm looking for today. I wonder if I can find someone who has the information I need."
