Chapter 19. Network Inside > Understand Power

Understand Power

At work, people with titles that are higher than yours may intimidate you. However, titles alone do not make people powerful in organizations. You may already have more power than you realize. Or you may be able to develop more power, even without getting promoted. At the very least, understanding where power comes from can help reduce your feelings of intimidation when you are dealing with people "up the ladder."

It's commonly said that the people on the front lines or the factory floor have the power to make or break the organization. In training classes throughout corporate America, there's been talk about "flipping the pyramid." In this way of looking at organizations, the people at the bottom of the organization are shown on top to make the point that executives should be supporting those people. Empowerment of employees not only is one of today's buzzwords, but also makes good business sense.
