Map Out a Plan

Draw a map of your contacts. On a big piece of paper, draw a circle and put your name inside it. Then draw circles with the names of everyone at work that you interact with. Add circles with the names of everyone you think you should interact with. If you don't know the name of one of these people, use his title or describe the type of job he has. For example, you may decide you want to know the editor of the corporate newsletter or some person in the IS department who can troubleshoot problems. You can find out those people's names later. Who else do you want or need to know in order to solve problems, contribute to the bottom line, uncork bottlenecks, or create career security? This map is your current and potential network at work.

On your map, rate each relationship:
