Next Steps

After you've checked your results in the eight skill areas, take a look at the big picture. Maybe you're doing well at meeting people, but you need to focus on being strategic. Or maybe you find that your comfort level is high, but you fall down on following up. Use this selfassessment to set your priorities. Should you go straight to a specific topic or chapter? If you give attention to specific areas, you'll see results quickly. For instance, if the self-assessment indicates that you need more skill in meeting people, then you'll want to pay special attention to Chapters 10, 11, and 12. If you find that you were stymied by a majority of the statements, you may decide to start at the beginning of this book and read straight through to the end.

Take out your day timer or Palm Pilot. Make a note to retake the self-assessment in six months. That way, you'll have time to read this book and to put many of the tips and techniques to work. Go ahead. Experiment. Making a small change or adding a new behavior can have a dramatic effect on your ability to connect with people. We predict you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easily you've made your new-found, state-of-the-art networking skills a way of life.
