Speculation abounds that professional facilitators created and perpetuated this myth to protect their high fees. While the idea that these professionals have valuable expertise is not a myth, it would be untrue to state that focus groups cannot be successful without this expensive expertise.

When deciding whether or not you need a professional facilitator, you must consider all of the roles this person might play on your project. The facilitator may do little more than conduct the groups; more commonly, however, this person is actively engaged in many more aspects of the project. In the beginning of the project, the facilitator often writes the interview questions; and, at the end of the project, he or she analyzes the data and writes the report.
