A Broader View of Intelligence

With his book, Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman has done a great deal to broaden our view of intelligence. Think of intuition as right-brain thinking or as part of emotional intelligence. Goleman shows that our conventional view of human intelligence is too narrow, ignoring abilities that matter immensely for what and how we do in life. Emotional intelligence includes:

Self-awareness, self-confidence, and psychological insight

Perspective taking, optimism, and motivation

Ability to accept and initiate change and to handle cognitive anxiety
