Chapter 19. Recognize That Reality Is in... > Beliefs Are the Software of Your Min...

Beliefs Are the Software of Your Mind’s Eye

To use a technology metaphor, your beliefs provide your operating instructions, like the software in the computer. They program what you attend to and therefore what you see. Someone else writes the computer programming; you write the software of your mind by choosing what to believe. Most people make sure their computer software is up-to-date but fail to pay attention to the possible obsolescence of the software that is programming the way they see things.

David Nyberg, author of The Varnished Truth, says, “Human self-deception is the most impressive software program ever devised.” Actually, this self-selective way of seeing may not be all bad. With so much going on around us, paying attention to everything would be utter chaos. Self-deception (our built-in software) helps us avoid chaos by selecting what to attend to. But it also prevents us from experiencing different ways of seeing. An open mind can expand your experiences and broaden your reality.
