Rationalization

When a project you have worked on turns sour, the temptation is to find reasons to blame others or find excuses. Rationalization is cover-up thinking because the truth might be an embarrassment or threat. Its aim is to prop up a person’s feelings of self-worth by proving to others that she is “right.” Rationalization may take form as denial, distortion, or self-delusion.

The cost of not confronting the truth, in relation to thinking clearly, is high. You forgo learning. You remain stuck at the level of presenting symptoms. Non-defensive truth telling is the first step toward discovering a creative, constructive remedy.
