Position Power

This power comes from control of resources and information. It is potent as long as employees accept as legitimate a manager’s authority to reward excellent performance, penalize poor performance, and make operational decisions.

Position power works less well at home with rebellious teenagers. (“Do it because I say so, and I’m the mother!”) Even at work, if position power is used arbitrarily or ineffectively, employees might disregard their direct manager and appeal to higher-level executives. They might even choose litigation or sabotage to block implementation.
