Chapter 14. Ethical-Legal Lens

The ethical-legal lens examines a proposal’s compliance with applicable law. Ethical behavior is more inclusive. It looks at the well-being of individuals, the needs of groups and of societal systems vulnerable to the consequences of a proposed action. Focus: Is this the “right” thing to be doing?

Ethical behavior requires a higher standard than simply complying with the law. The ethical-legal lens helps you decide, for example, if it is appropriate to hire detectives to rummage through a competitor’s garbage. Such an activity is not illegal (if the detectives don’t trespass), but their ethics might be questionable.
