Collaboration

Collaborative decision-making aims at creative win-win solutions acceptable to all participants. Participating decision-makers must share a common purpose and values, listen well, and disclose relevant information, even when it makes them feel vulnerable. Thus, successful collaboration requires mutual trust and respect. Keep group size small enough for active discussion and large enough to include people with diverse views.

Although collaboration is the most time-consuming of the four strategies, it has offsetting benefits. Interpersonal skills are honed, teamwork is fostered, multiple perspectives are gained, and creativity is stimulated. Participants also acquire such an intimate, hands-on knowledge of the issues that decision implementation moves quickly. Unanimity is desirable but not essential as long as participants accept group decisions as worthy of energetic support.
