Chapter 30. Comments on the Cases > Maria’s Mood Swings

Case 1:. Maria’s Mood Swings

First, realize that it’s difficult to help others control their attitudes. But, you can make suggestions when someone appears to be receptive, and you can make these suggestions in a positive, sensitive way. Here’s what you might say to Maria:

  • “You’re on overload. If you could just trim back some on the energy you pour into all your responsibilities, maybe you could cut away some time for yourself and be able to relax more.”

  • “Try to lighten up–laugh a little more.”

  • “You’re really doing okay–a lot better than most of the rest of us. But, the little things seem to hit you harder–even though these little things always seem to disappear quickly. When your kids get sick, they bounce back in a couple of days. And, last year you pretty much caught up on your holiday bills in a month or so. Try to see past the little things and think about all the positive stuff that’s going on.”
