What Is the Communicator’s Intent?

Distinguishing between arguments and explanations can be confusing also because some statements can appear to be both. The difference is in the context and the speaker’s or writer’s intent. If evidence is given to support a conclusion, it is an argument. If evidence is given to answer a question, it is an explanation. We must use good judgment to discern the difference.
