Chapter 27. How Well Do You Listen? > Tips for Better Listening

Tips for Better Listening

Take notes.

Listen and repeat. When you repeat what you heard you tend to remember.

Demonstrate that you want to listen. Show desire, interest, and focus.

Be present. Stop your mind from wandering.

Keep a positive outlook.

Become a “total” listener. Use your ears, eyes, and mind.

Build rapport by matching the speakers gestures, expressions, and voice patterns, if appropriate.

Monitor your “hot buttons” —know what makes you angry.

Control distractions (e.g., turn off cell phone, pager)

When you are listening and responding, choosing the correct words can make a real difference. Show the speaker that you are open-minded and receptive.
