Facilitation Tips

Don’t monopolize the discussion.

Don’t show verbal or non-verbal disapproval of ideas, even if you disagree with them.

Frame problems as opportunities. Don’t ask if it’s possible to achieve a goal; ask “How can we achieve our goal?”

Identify (to yourself) the introverts in the group and find ways to include them without putting them on the spot.

Don’t let extroverts monopolize.

Don’t let senior members of the group dominate.

Use meeting procedures that require the participation of all.

Probe to find out what’s bothering those who exhibit “hostile silence.”

Change the initial seating arrangement, if necessary.

Rotate leadership in standing meetings.
