Habits that Promote Lifelong Learning

Below are a few habits that support the goal of being a lifelong learner. Try to build as many of these habits into your life as possible.

Looking for and taking on new challenges

Reading, and reading some more

Listening to news and informational radio

Listening to instructional cassettes

Exploring new technologies, especially learning about the Internet

Talking to different people, especially people you don’t always agree with

Varying your routine

Visiting libraries and museums

Saying yes (within reason) when you’re asked “Would you like to try…?”

Saying no to reruns

Learning new words

Taking classes and/or attending training

Trying new hobbies

Asking “Can I try that?”

Traveling to new and interesting places

Getting familiar with the public and educational channels on the TV

Using the off button on the TV remote

Volunteering

Getting in “over your head”

Looking up words you aren’t sure of

Flipping through the dictionary or encyclopedia and randomly reading the entries
