A Time to Learn

Applying the information about your biological clock is simple. Learning requires you to be mentally alert; the more demanding the learning, the more alert you need to be. Whenever possible, schedule learning tasks during your prime time and avoid them during your slack time. This is especially true when setting aside time to read. Reading is a fairly passive activity and makes many people sleepy if they try to do it when their energy level is low. Also, avoid scheduling lecture classes during low energy times of day.

What if Your Prime Time is Outside Your Normal Schedule?

You may find that your prime learning time is outside your normal schedule. Many people who live and work in a busy environment find that very early in the morning before the rest of the house is awake or late at night after others have gone to bed offer the most distraction-free times. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking you can get by with less rest than you need—a tired brain loses much of its sharpness. Some adults try to postpone learning until everything else is done; the problem is, everything else is never done. Learning time must be a priority.
