Experience: The Best Teacher?

You’ve heard the expression, “You learn from experience.” That saying is partly true. Every day life presents opportunities to learn from experiences, whether you take advantage of those opportunities is a different story. Have you ever made the same “dumb mistake” more than once? Ever done the same painful thing more than once? It may be because you didn’t learn from your earlier experience.

You learn from experience when you think critically about those experiences. Even mistakes (maybe especially mistakes) can provide valuable learning insights if you employ a simple concept called the Experiential Learning Cycle. The Experiential Learning Cycle consists of asking and answering three questions as they relate to a particular event or experience.
