Graduate Programs

Programs begun after completion of a bachelor degree that lead to a Master, Specialist, or Doctorate degree.

GLORIA: A CASE STUDY

Gloria is a single mother of two children, works full-time at a local hospital as a practical nurse, manages the household, and spends as much time with her children as possible. She also lives in the same city as her aging parents and tries to help them out when they need her. She is living on a very modest income and knows that she and the children will need a larger paycheck as years go by.

Gloria knows that the registered nurses she works with make much better money than she does. She has talked to several of them and found that most of the new nurses have bachelor’s degrees. She had a brief conversation with a university advisor and was shocked at how long it would take to finish a degree in nursing. She has also talked to the other nurses about the difficulty of the program, and they advised her that there were many hours of study involved. Since it has been 10 years since she last was in school, she doubts her ability to keep up.

Her goal of earning a better paycheck by becoming a registered nurse seems almost impossible with the demands of family and job. She is very discouraged.
