I Resist Change

Resistance is an internal barrier to change. It surfaces when our beliefs or values appear to be threatened. Resistance is often accompanied by physical sensations of tension, anger or a feeling of being overwhelmed. Resistance to change is normal, but you can make a conscious decision to look at your beliefs or values in relation to the topic of discussion without moving into an emotional reaction. There are two things you can do to keep a clear head.

  1. Remember that understanding the other person’s position does not mean that you have to agree with it. Listen to understand the other point of view and try to understand why that person believes it.

  2. Be open to the idea that you do not have all the answers to all the questions in the universe. If you admit that there are other possibilities, it will be easier to find them.
