Chapter 11. Let’s Make Steel

Think of the way that people come together to work to consensus as being similar to the process of making steel. Steel is a strong metal, but to make it, you have to start with something else. To make steel, you start with iron.

Iron is the fourth most common element in the earth’s crust. By itself, iron is brittle and rusts easily. Iron is useful, but steel is stronger and more valuable. Yet iron, when handled in a certain way, turns into steel.
