Chapter 11. Let’s Make Steel > Agreeing on “Why We Are Here”

Agreeing on “Why We Are Here”

The group came together for a reason, but what is that reason? Usually there are as many ideas on why we are here as there are people in the group. Until participants share a common understanding and agreement on the purpose of the group, they will be little progress. This common agreement on the purpose of the group can be called the “charter” or “mission” or “objective” or “goal” of the group. Although each of these words may mean something slightly different, don’t get obsessed with terminology. The important point is to make sure that everyone understands and agrees why the group exists. You can help by suggesting that groups have a better chance of being successful if they:

  • Document the group’s purpose in writing with all the members of the group participating.

  • Check with each member of the group to make sure they understand the group’s purpose.

  • Check with each member of the group to make sure they agree with the group’s purpose.

  • Do not go on until these steps are done.
