Setting Up Rules of the Road

New groups become more productive quicker if participants agree to standards of conduct. This code of conduct sets the expectation for the members of the group concerning what is acceptable and what is not in their dealings with each other. All members of the group should participate in creating the Rules of the Road and all members should agree to them. Even if you are not the leader of the group, you can be an advocate for the group needing and creating these standards of conduct. Once the rules are decided, you can ask, “Does each member feel comfortable with these rules?” or “Is everyone prepared to follow these rules?” Check in with yourself and with your group members.
