Personality Conflicts

Many people believe that conflict is negative and destructive to the consensus process, but nothing could be further from the truth. Conflict can be a powerful source of creativity and innovation. The secret to using conflict positively is to manage it. To use conflict as a positive source of change, acknowledge that conflict exists. Avoiding the situation may escalate bad feelings, so acknowledgment is a critical step.

Next, accept responsibility. Every person is responsible for his or her behavior, and no one engages in conflict alone. If the conflict is between you and another person, address it with him or her outside of the meeting time. Talk about your behavior and concerns. State clearly that you wish to resolve the issue and move forward. Ask for the other person’s help in resolving the disagreement. Be willing to take the first step toward resolution.
