Part V: Managing Others > Lessons Learned

Chapter 29. Lessons Learned

Interaction with others can provide a welcome break to a day spent home alone. Repeated or unwanted interruptions can drain your time and energy.

  • Identify situations that are problems for you where others monopolize your time and attention.

  • Let go of those you can easily adapt or plan around and focus on select key issues.

  • Deal constructively with the people involved by honoring your rights as well as their’s. Use assertion rather than aggression.

  • Proactively prevent problems before they occur by clarifying changes and new boundaries. Get input from everyone who is affected.

  • If being assertive is new or difficult for you, find low-risk situations and practice. Build up to setting boundaries with your best friend in areas where you’re concerned you won’t be understood.
