Chapter 13. Only in Your Dreams?

Vanished into thin air. How frustrating when a client’s contract just disappears. I recall getting it in the mail. It was exciting after many months of work to actually see the signed contract. I had a few questions but now it’s fust vanished. Some days, the piles of stuff seem to multiply and have a life of their own. My intentions of getting organized just don’t materialize. Some emergency always calls. Others have offered to help, but I fear I’d never find anything again. I’m usually able to dive midway into the pile and find what I need. But where is that contract! Something tells me my filing system isn’t working.

The phone rings, the bank is calling. Unhappiness is hearing that I’ve overdrawn my account. I thought I deposited that last big check from my primary contractor. I think I remember what happened. I put it in my mail pile. Oh no, maybe it ended up with the junk mail. I eventually tossed the junk mail unopened. Don’t tell me I have to go through the trash. This is getting boring…I’ve done this before.

The phone rings again. John, a technical writer I met at a professional meeting, is waiting at the restaurant and is wondering where I ant. We set up the meeting last week. My calendar…where is my calendar? Oh, it’s in the kitchen where I left it last night. Why can’t I remember to look at it each day? Once again, I’ve missed a meeting. Help, I’m out of control!

Are the above scenes too familiar? Is it only in your dreams that you have a balanced checkbook, find everything you need and never miss meetings?
