Part I: Getting Started > What is Work to You?

Chapter 2. What is Work to You?

When you hear the word “work” what visions and thoughts come to mind? Do you see a ditch digger on the chain gang, an earlier generation out harvesting the field, or someone sitting at their terminal keying endlessly for hours? Each person’s perception of work is unique and often not consciously defined.

For some, work is something to schedule between play. For others, play is scheduled around work. Do you associate work with hours of the day or days of the week? Work can be play for those who work their passion. Work can be drudgery for those unable to find or follow their passion. Is work like a security blanket—it provides comfort, you often take it to bed with you, or you cry when it’s taken away? Or do you work primarily for the financial benefits so you can do or buy the things you need or love? Or, again, do you work for a sense of belonging? Would you work if you won the lottery?
