Shame

“I can’t look my co-workers in the eye anymore.” “Since I lost my supervisory role, I’m too embarrassed to even eat in the cafeteria.” “I just know the whole neighborhood is talking about what’s going on.” “I can’t face my parents now that I have been demoted.” “I don’t even tell people I meet where I work now.”

The part of us that is our work identity may get lost when reorganizations, mergers and redeployments occur. We’re not on the same team anymore, or not part of the decision-making process, or have lost some of the trappings of workplace status. We are ashamed and reluctant to let friends and neighbors know what is happening.
