Change!

Permanent white water! This is how today’s workplace world has been described and will continue to be characterized. A new paradigm has cascaded over what was once taken for granted in the places where we work. We can no longer assume that things will stay as they have been—salaries, benefits, people, locations, company names, job descriptions and job security are all vulnerable to swift and drastic change. The new “psychological contract” between employer and employee does not provide workers with assured continuity in a company. In fact, many business organizations are moving toward work teams and are cutting back on middle managers. Businesses are no longer willing to automatically guarantee employees job security in return for loyalty and work well done. Workers are more and more often considered part-time resources. Increasingly, organizations are judging job continuation on the basis of performance and short-term needs, rather than by family-like emotional ties.
