Stage IV—Depression

“I feel like someone has died.” “It’s painful to come to work now.” “I hurt inside and don’t even want to come here anymore.” “I find myself crying and wanting to run away.” “I think of any excuse not to come to work.” “What’s the use?!”

Workplace change brings about a real sense of death. The actual loss of people, work routines, location, or control disrupts an important part of the person’s total identity and meaning in life. The sense of knowing what to expect from the organization and what is expected by the organization is also lost, as new psychological contracts are forged in a shrinking work environment.
