Chapter 12. KüBler-Ross Stages Of Loss > Stage III—Bargaining

Stage III—Bargaining

“Maybe if I come in earlier and stay later I’ll survive the next layoff.” “Can we keep these procedures for a little while longer?” “Is there any way that I can keep my office? My desk? My parking space?” “I’ll even work for less money if I can stay in my old division.”

When faced with loss, people usually try to keep the bonds to The Old as intact as they can. In the face of life-threatening illness, a person may bargain with his or her Creator and promise to pray regularly, eat healthier, quit smoking or drinking, exercise, act “nicer” and generally improve his or her lifestyle. Loved ones may secretly promise to be kinder than ever to the ill person, to pray, to give to charity and do whatever they can to hold on to what was.
